We often learn something too late in life
As we grow older, we
occasionally learn something that we wish we had known when we were
younger, sometimes when it's too late
for us
to use the knowledge. Some people refer to this as: “Too soon old; too
late smart.”
Example: I prefer meat cooked at low
temperatures
An example that I mentioned
in other documents is that I discovered
several decades ago that I should ignore the authorities
who tell us to cook pork and chicken to a high temperature. I
discovered that I prefer meat cooked at a low temperature for a longer
amount of time, but I did not know
there were sous
vide devices
available for sale until perhaps 10 years ago. I recently bought one,
and now can easily cook pork at 57°C, and chicken at 58°C.
Lastest Discovery: Use soapy water to change tires
On 28 June 2023 I replaced
an inner tube in my brother's wife's bicycle. As I was struggling to
put the tire
back onto the rim, I pinched the inner tube, which put a hole in it. It
then occurred to me that I should try the technique that (at least
some) people use at the automobile tire shops; specifically, wipe the tire with soapy water.
So I bought a new innertube, and wiped the tire and rim with soapy
water, and was shocked at how easy it was to
slip the tire back under the rim.
It was another of those, "I wish I had known this sooner" moments. Also
known as “I can't believe it took me so long to learn this!”
